1. Definition

Hot-dip galvanized steel pipes are carbon steel pipes coated with a protective zinc layer through the hot-dip galvanizing process.

Hot-dip galvanizing has been one of the most effective and widely adopted corrosion protection methods since 1836. The process forms a durable zinc–steel metallurgical bond, creating a long-lasting protective barrier that shields the steel from environmental exposure. For over 180 years, this technology has been extensively applied in construction, transportation, infrastructure, and high-performance industrial applications.

2. Key characteristics

• Zinc coating thickness: 40-80 μm (significantly thicker than cold galvanizing, typically 20–30 μm)
• Surface appearance: Coarse, matte finish with a silver-gray tone, coating uniformity may vary depending on process conditions.
• Mechanical properties: Approximately 195 MPa (yield strength), 320-520 MPa (tensile strength), over 50 years in rural environments, and approximately 20 years in urban or coastal areas (service life).

Thanks to these characteristics, hot-dip galvanized steel pipes are widely regarded as a cost-effective alternative to austenitic stainless steel or aluminum for corrosion-prone environments.

4. Manufacturing process

The hot-dip galvanizing process involves immersing steel pipes in molten zinc after thorough surface preparation.

• Sizing and straightening
• Cutting to length
• Pickling (surface cleaning)
